Students auditioning must be able to commit to the entire Jazz Festival ScheduleStudents in grades 9-12 and members in good standing in their school band are eligible to participate.

  • The school music teacher must be a member of WCSMA and is responsible for signing and submitting all applications.
  • Students already selected for Conference All-State Jazz Ensemble are NOT automatically selected for the All-County Ensemble. They must fill out the Student Application AND AUDITION for placement.
  • If selected, students must attend ALL rehearsals & performances and agree that they will not be committed to events inside or outside of their school building on the rehearsal dates. Failure to comply will result in removal from the festival. No Exceptions.
  • Fill out a student application for an audition. Do not audition if you cannot commit to all the above rehearsal dates and times, including the Snow Dates.
  • All student applications must be postmarked by December 21st, 2017.
  • All auditions are heard on a first-come, first-serve basis. Please arrive early to get out early.  You will not be assigned a particular time slot.

All Jazz auditions will consist of the following:

1.)  SOLO (all instruments): Prepare one of the following: Any Jazz solo from the NYSSMA Manual Volume XXXI, Level V or VI or Solo Transcriptions by:

Charlie Parker “Omnibook”, Clifford Brown, Hank Mobley, Sonny Stitt, Stan Getz, Kenny Dorham, Freddie Hubbard, John Coltrane, etc.  We want to encourage students to learn to transcribe solos by jazz artists.  Any student who wishes to use a solo they have transcribed must bring an audio recording of the solo in addition to the printed out transcribed solo

Or One Selection From: Jazz Conception, by Jim Snidero (Advanced; NOT the Easy Jazz Conception book; Must be a level V or VI)

(If you have questions about whether a particular solo will qualify, please have your Band Director contact Mr. James Mullen, festival coordinator (

2.SIGHT READING (all instruments): Manuscript supplied at the site. Guitar and piano players will sight-read written melodic lines as well as chord progressions with symbols. Bass players will sight-read written lines as well as chord symbols without a bass line.

3.IMPROVISATION (except drum set): Improvisation is recommended, but not required. It is suggested that applicants who choose to improvise refer to the NYSSMA Jazz improvisation requirements for levels V-VI found in the NYSSMA Manual, Edition 31. The selected songs are to be chosen from Jamey Aebersold play along Volume 54-Maiden Voyage (tracks 7, 8, or 14) or Volume 7-Miles Davis (tracks 1, 4, 7 & 10). In addition, tracks from the Jamey Aebersold Volume 2, Nothing But the Blues, may be used. Each audition room will be supplied with a CD player, however, students must provide their own CD’s.

Students not wishing to improvise will be asked to perform major scales. Students with good section playing skills are encouraged to audition even if they do not wish to improvise.

Drum set (In addition to your prepared Solo and 1 and 2 above): In a style chosen by the adjudicator, students will be asked to play 4 measures of time followed by 4 measures of solo, and an extended solo of 30 seconds. Students will also be asked to demonstrate 4 measures of time (quarter note = 80 – 200) in swing, Latin (salsa/Cuban, samba, bossa nova), jazz waltz, rock/funk, and ballad (with brushes).

Amplifiers and drum set will be provided.
